If there was an alternate universe where dinosaurs were not erased from existance due to any meteorites colliding with their planet, what terrifying monsters could possibly evolve from the two apex predators of Late Cretaceous Africa? The answer: Two even more terrifying monsters which would rule Africa with an iron fist... or jaw.
On the left you have Gatorotherium niloticus, a.k.a the Nile Deathjaw. This dinosaur stalks the rivers and lakesides of Sub-Saharan Africa, lying in wait underwater and using its massive tail to propel itself towards its unwary prey, or in nearby shrubs, where it would ambush its target. At 18 metres long and weighing in at 10 tons, it is the largest land carnivore ever and... suprisingly fast. This predator was big enough to tackle even the largest of Mokeles, yet fast enough to chase down Hornmeisters. Its large feet enable it to walk through its swampy habitat without sinking into mud. Its large claws allow it to grapple with prey items or slash them to pieces. Rather than having a sail along its back, the Nile Deathjaw has evolved 2 rows of massive spines for display and to protect it from attacking rivals. But its true reputation come in the form of its jaws. Built rather similarly to an alligator's jaws, it was far more robust and heavy in comparison to the narrow, lightly built jaws of its ancestors. This allowed it to generate the most powerful biteforce the world has ever known; 7 tons per square inch... The only predator which would even dare to attack a Nile Deathjaw is the predator on the right, Kasaidontosaurus rex, commonly known as the Kasai Ravager. This is basically the dinosaurian equivilent of the african lion, except it is a solitary hunter, taking down a range of animals, such as Cirafs and Ngoubous. This animal was obviously descended from the Cretaceous giant, Carcharodontosaurus. It is 14 metres long and over 5 tons in weight, putting it in the same weight class as the Imperial Sabre-tyrants of the North Pole. Since the number of sauropod species have declined, it no longer posesses the typical jaws of carnosaurs, which were used to slice though meat, and weaken their prey. It evolved more robust jaws, similar to the jaws of Tyrannosaurus rex. Its arms and legs are much longer and stronger than those of Cretaceous carnosaurs, allowing it to pursue its prey across the African plains before disemboweling its victim with its claws and teeth. It prefers more densely shrubbed areas, where its camouflage can be put to use most effectively. The Ciraf, Hornmeister, Mokele and Sabre- tyrant are really cool animals from the SpecDino Project site. [link] |
